My time at Grittleton was a memorable and refreshing experience that will stay with me forever. I
very much appreciate the bursary kindly sponsored by Hidersine; without it I wouldn’t have acquired
the skills I now possess. Some of the works that we played during the week were; Trio by Dancla,
Sextet B flat major by Brahms, Mendelssohn Octet in E flat major. My favourite was the Trio by
Dancla, I played violin 1 and led the group. The piece really came together and we were able to
bounce off each other well. One of the main skills we focused on was our sight reading, it allowed us
to pick up new music and instantly start playing together. This was an unknown territory for me as I
lacked in sight reading experience, so coming away from the course my sight reading capabilities
were drastically improved. My ability to listen to my fellow players and play in unison with them
progressed well. I learnt how to adjust and adapt my own playing to the players I was surrounded
by, I had to be aware of my timing, dynamics and intonation. These are only a few of the skills I
gained from the course. Thank you again for allowing me to have this wonderful opportunity.
