The Boy Paganini

This Fantasia provides opportunities to learn about accidentals and the swift movement of the same finger. G major arpeggios and dominant 7ths feature in this piece.

Elegiac Blues

A piece with a good jazz feel, swung quavers and languid phrasing. There is lots of shifting, chromatic movement and some thumb position. There are pizzicato chords and double stops. It merits work with the piano for ensemble.

If I were a Rich Man (Fiddler on the Roof)

Fantastic, well-known tune with simple position changes up to and including 4th position. Also with chromatic passages, accidentals to read and expressive bowing.

Other good arrangements are available in this book, Grades 2-5

The Entertainer

A fun arrangement of this popular tune featuring some syncopation and chromaticism.

The book has an easy violin accompaniment whilst piano accompaniment and an audio backing track are also available.

Palavas Blues

A Blues-style piece with an easy open string plus first finger lower part which would be ideal for a violinist learning the alto clef. The upper part is all in first position but with chromatic movement for both 1st and 2nd fingers. Ties and syncopation feature within a 12/8 time signature.

Volume 1 of ViolaFest is full of useful duets, trios and quartets and there is a second volume.
