Waltz

A fun way to develop confidence in the waltz idiom with a ‘lifted bow/long bow’ pattern that can be learned playing scales. There is some use of ‘low’ 2nd finger.

Andantino in G

A beautiful melody (and lovely accompaniment ) to help develop a singing tone and with the potential to introduce speed changes (ritenuto) and a wide dynamic range. Requires some use of ‘low’ 2nd finger. Would suit a pupil who is developing fast musically. Also published by Faber in First Repertoire for Violin.

Palavas Blues

A Blues-style piece with an easy open string plus first finger lower part which would be ideal for a violinist learning the alto clef. The upper part is all in first position but with chromatic movement for both 1st and 2nd fingers. Ties and syncopation feature within a 12/8 time signature.

Volume 1 of ViolaFest is full of useful duets, trios and quartets and there is a second volume.

March

A lively, engaging piece in contemporary style. Rhythmically straightforward apart from one dotted rhythm, it features both hooked bows and quick retakes. It is in first position throughout, using both basic finger patterns.

Theme from “Witches Dance”

The theme from “Witches Dance” has dotted rhythms which are to be played with hooked bows. It contains good practice for simple arpeggios and there are some accidentals that involve a change of finger pattern.

Pre-recorded piano accompaniment is readily available on YouTube.
