A good piece for introducing the harmonic minor scale, as well as easy double stopping. Lively and rhythmical in style.
Uses repetitive scale fragments in a mix of crotchet and quaver rhythm. Mostly separate bows but with a couple of easy slurs. Works both fast and slow according to the temperament of the student and can be used to practise increasing tempo.
A very effective piece for intermediate bass players. Some of the passage work is tricky and will require focused practice. The contrasting middle section is less virtuosic but still has moments of fast scales and arpeggio figures. Orchestral parts available.
Alla Polacca is in ternary form. In the outer sections the Polka feel comes from the piano while the bass player needs good co-ordination to navigate the many semiquavers. The middle section benefits from a good cantabile sound.
Originally a study, this makes a very good concert piece.
This lively piece features many celloistic techniques including slurs of various lengths, spiccato, scale patterns and double stops. It has a more lyrical middle section in the tonic major.
Tarantella is an ever-popular exam choice. It is recommended for ‘A’ level recitals.
