Czardas

Just what you would expect from a piece with this title – an exciting slow introduction with tremolo accompaniment and then a lively section with fast and furious semiquavers. Syncopated rhythms abound. All parts get the tune at various points.

Viola 1 has some treble clef. Viola 3 and 4 are probably slightly easier than Grade 6.

ViolaFest Volume 2 has many more trios and quartets for viola ensemble or a mixed violin and viola group.

Prayer

The Jewish character of this highly expressive piece derives both from its modal tonality, which incorporates many augmented seconds, and from its quasi-improvisatory rhythmic gestures. It requires confidence in shifting to high positions and good bow control to achieve a clear tone high on the A string.

It is recommended for ‘A’ level recitals.

Vocalise

This well-known late-romantic piece requires expressive phrasing and vibrato, a high degree of bow control and a secure left hand.

A popular choice for exams and concerts.

Kol Nidrei

This highly expressive piece based on Jewish melodies is a must for every cellist’s repertoire. Requires cantabile tone, secure shifting in high positions and a wide dynamic range.

Prelude

The Prelude, first movement from the Suite for Viola and Orchestra, is a truly lovely piece though quite demanding technically. It has changes of style, key, clef and time signature. At the start it is reminiscent of a Bach unaccompanied suite.
