The first movement of the Capuzzi Concerto marks a right of passage for upper intermediate bass players. It is in full sonata form and requires good characterisation of the two main subjects. The development section explores a range of keys concluding with a dramatic theme in F# minor. There is a brief moment in thumb position in tenor clef at the very end with a D major scale up to B above the octave G on the G-string. If the full opening orchestral tutti is included the movement is 8 mins.
A lively and flamboyant piece by bassist-composer Miloslav Gajdoš showing off the range of possibilities of double stopping on the double bass. Sounds harder than it is, but requires stamina.
A rhapsodic concerto: Moderato; Allegro Apassionato; Tema ed Improvvisazioni.
There is much use of double stops and chords, natural harmonics, arpeggios and ornaments. It requires excellent co-ordination between the hands.
The piano reduction requires an experienced pianist.
Lovely modal/minor legato piece (ABA), making good use of every string. If you are looking for a relatively unknown Grade 2/3 concert piece written by someone who understands teaching, this is a great concert piece.
Good for a student who needs to develop a sense of phrase it lies all in first position with some limited use of forward and backward extensions.
Piano part about Grade 5
