This gentle piece is in the rather awkward key of Eb major thereby giving plenty of shifting practice. It requires good bow control and an expressive singing tone.

It has remained popular despite its doubtful authenticity. Some believe it to be a 20th Century hoax by the violinist Samuel Dushkin.
