String Quartet in A minor No.13 Op.29 First movement

The first movement – Allegro ma non troppo – of this quartet contains one of the most haunting and memorable of string melodies. Whilst rhythmically cohesive, a good inner pulse allowing subdivisions into 2, 3 and 4 is critical.

The violin only goes up to top F and the cello never departs from the bass clef. However, there are many individual passing chromatic slurred triplets that would benefit from careful preparation.

A great dynamic range is exploited and an equal strength of players throughout the group is essential.

Perfect piece for a strong viola player!
